Renewable energy company

Background
Our client, is a leading provider of 100% renewable energy to both domestic and business markets in the UK. Their IT infrastructure availability and ability to recover effectively from all forms of data loss are critical to their business.

Business issue
Their backup strategy was based on backups to external disks via USB connectivity. Whilst cost effective, this solution was not scalable and was failing to backup and verify the total storage within the time available. Ultimately, left unresolved, the growth of the business would be put at significant risk.

Objective
To design and implement a backup solution that would be capable of backing up our client’s data both today and in 3 years' time when totals may be several terabytes, The solution must also be fast enough to cope with the limited backup windows available overnight and at weekends.

Solution
Avagio specified a solution based on tape library technology to provide both storage size and speed scalability. The latest tape drive technology, LTO4, was selected as this boasted 1600Gb storage per tape and more importantly could backup at speeds of up to 100Mb per second.

Results
The new LTO4 tape library has reduced full backup (with verify) times from over 48 hours to approximately 9 hours; a 500% improvement. Their SQL database of approximately 50Gb is backed up in 10 minutes and if necessary can be restored in similar timescales! Future proofing is achieved through the support of an additional LTO4 drive, doubling throughput rates. This solution enables our client to continue to grow, taking on new clients and staff knowing they are protected against malware, theft, fire and flood.

Kembrey Wiring

Background
Kembrey Wiring Systems Ltd are a leading provider of electro-mechanical assemblies to the aerospace sector. Their IT infrastructure is critical to their business success and is core to their business processes in finance, manufacturing, design and HR.

Business issue
In the past Kembrey employed internal IT resource to manage their infrastructure and advise on IT strategy. However, they realised increasingly, systems were becoming unreliable, increasing downtime costs, and other inefficiencies.

Objective
To improve the security and overall stability of the IT infrastructure at a reasonable cost so that Kembrey could focus on their core business.

Solution
Avagio were asked to complete an in-depth audit of the IT infrastructure including processes, security, performance and stability. We presented our findings highlighting strategic critical and non-critical issues. Following the report, Kembrey signed up to the Avagio managed service and Avagio are responsible for all aspects of the infrastructure support and management. During the first three months, we provided onsite resource and working closely with Kembrey, we put in place processes to streamline the IT support operation, tightened security and reduced the level of risk due to software or hardware failure.

Results
Kembrey are managed eighty per cent of the time on a remote basis and there have been improvements not only in the level of response and resolution times when support is required but also the overall level of system stability and availability has increased. The benefits for Kembrey are increased efficiency, 100% helpdesk cover, increased visibility on the service provided and access to a team of skilled engineers and consultants giving them the economies of scale and expertise that larger companies enjoy. Importantly Kembrey management can now refocus on their business objectives knowing Avagio are taking care of their IT.
